George Clooney stars with Jennifer Lopez in this obliging and tantalizing romantic heist movie, unfortunately great overlooked and poorly promoted on its theatrical release. Based on the recent by Elmore Leonard and superbly and subtly directed by Steven Soderbergh. George Clooney (as bank robber Jack Foley) and Jennifer Lopez (as Federal Marshall Karen Sisco) light up the cover with previously unparalleled sexual chemistry in the movie that finally launched their astronomical camouflage careers to the A list, after previous fallacious starts (such as The Peacemaker and The Money Screech respectively) . Also boasting a very impressive supporting cast that includes Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn, Albert Brooks, Dennis Farina (as Jennifer Lopez father) and expansive cameos from Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson, movies really don’t acquire distinguished better than this.Principally this is the fable of serial bank robber Jack Foley and Federal Marshall Karen Sisco, on opposite sides of the law but inescapably attracted to each other. When Jack escapes from prison aided by his friend Buddy (Rhames) he ends up in the trunk of a car with the kidnapped Karen Sisco (Lopez) after she nearly foils the prison fracture. However, thanks to their inept friend Glenn Michaels (Zahn), Karen escapes and Jack and Buddy have to go on the hasten. Meanwhile, Karen Sisco is hot on Jack’s straggle in more ways than one in this brilliantly played, beautifully written, excellently directed movie. This has everything I like about movies, a substantial sage, enormous cast and sizable style. Truly unmissable and well splendid of five stars.

When I finally got my DVD player this was the first one I bought. Why? Because not only is the film spectacular but this DVD has a host of astonishing extras that very few DVD’s can match. The fable and characters are all well opinion out and I never felt that this film made a misstep. I never write reviews for these kinds of things but I read that one person felt that this film was unoriginal and I unprejudiced had to say my portion. If anything this film is completely new. I am a film major and have been in school studying film for almost four years, trust me when I say this film is deserving of its praise and it has a lot of it.

The documentary is the story of Shelby’s crusade to change sex education in her hometown of Lubbock, TX, which suffers astronomically high rates of teen pregnancy and STD transmission. Throughout the course of the movie, we watch Shelby mature from an outspoken and passionate high school sophomore to a confident, eloquent, convicted junior who is unafraid of even the most entrenched opponents. When a values coalition leader threatens to use his power to fire any city official who works with Shelby, and then tells Shelby not to undermine her own religious morality, she puts him in his place and firmly tells him not to question her personal relationship with God.

Shelby comes from a dedicated Republican father and compassionate Christian mother. Their order of priorities is God, Family, Country. Shelby does much soul searching during her campaign, talking with her pastor about her religion and its place in her school, as well as quizzing him on the church’s stance on gays. By the end of the film, Shelby emerges as a fierce Democrat who has convinced her Republican parents of the importance of sex education but can’t get them to budge on gay rights. This is as much the story of religion’s hold on Lubbock as it is the making of a political activist. Shelby Knox reminds us all to act with passion about the issues close to our hearts.

The Education of Shelby Knox is a rare film about a person who tries to make a difference in her world. The film focuses on three years in the life of Shelby Knox a Lubbuck, Texas teen as she fights for sex education in her school district.

Shelby Knox knew that the abstinence only policy of her school district was not working. Lubbuck has one of the highest teen pregnancy and teen STD rates in the country. As the newly elected member of the Lubbuck Youth Commission she tries to tackle sex education head on. We see her struggles with her peers, her community, her pastor, her parents and herself as she tries to reconcile her strict Southern Baptist beliefs with the world she lives in.

This is the rare documentary that gives an honest portrait of someone who is trying to make a difference. The struggles may not always provide the results that are hoped for but they do help to build a better world. Knox through her convictions grows as a person and as a citizen.

This is the type of film that if seen by more people would really make a difference. You may not share all of her beliefs but you cannot help but be proud of this young woman who stands up for what she believes in.

There must really be a god; the commercial release of the BBC production of Anthony Trollope’s “The Barchester Chronicles” is answer to this heathen’s prayers. I watched this presentation on A&E (having missed the PBS program) in the mid-1980s and managed to make a very poor tape of the program. Since that time I wished intently that The Barchester Chronicles would become commercially available before I die. Now it is on DVD! (and obviously I’m not dead either) This BBC presentation is one of the best things I have ever witnessed either on stage, big screen or small screen.

Although the ads to this DVD emphasize that Alan Rickman has a leading role, (he IS wonderful) he is NOT the only superb actor in this film; he is just one of many! Everyone in this presentation gives an outstanding performance. As stated before Alan Rickman is wonderful as the slimy Mr. Slope (really Slop; however, he added the “e”!)-watch how he moves like a snake which the character is!) His sparing partner is Geraldine McEwen. They start off as “chums” but by the end of the story they are bitter enemies. Their “duals” will have you on the floor with laughter. Geraldine is most frightening as the bishop’s wife (actually she is the REAL bishop and has all of the power because her husband has no spine and is given to numbing migraine headaches brought on by his wife-the bishop’s role is played delightfully by Clive Swift). One of my favorite actors, the late great Nigel Hawthorne plays the “about to explode at all times” Archdeacon who tries to keep things as they are while the Clergyman (Rickman) and the ferocious Bishop’s wife (McEwen) are determined to change things to their own benefit. (Proof that Sir Nigel was a great actor is to be had by comparing his performance as the Archdeacon in Barchester with his fabulous performance as Georgie Pillson in “Mapp and Lucia”; you won’t think it’s the same person that is playing both roles–he was amazing!!)In the midst of all of these goings on is the calming presence and moral fortitude of the clergymen (Warden) as played by Donald Pleasence.
I’ve named just a few of the actors and the characters they play. There is much much more!! There is a host of great actors giving superb performances including Susan Hampshire.
Don’t be deterred by what could be perceived as a little “slowness” in the first episode; it’s just “laying the groundwork” for the “riot” that is to come. Believe me it will be one of the greatest things you have ever seen. The production, camera work direction and most of all the acting is truly awesome!
Now, I can truly die happy! The Barchester Chronicles has been finally released commercially and I’m thrilled as you will be if you buy his DVD!

BBC & Trollope’s fascinating look at corruption in the Church of England

Based on the book by Anthony Trollope, “The Barchester Chronicles,” is a fascinating and satirical look at corruption in the Church of England, and the reformers who wish to make changes, and end up getting more than they bargained for.

Reverend Septimus Harding (Donald Pleasence), a decent, gentle and caring man who values music and it’s relation to God above all else, is the clergyman in charge of Hiram’s Hospital. John Hiram, a rich and influential man, has died decades before, leaving money for the forming and management of a men’s hospital, intended for worn out old men to take refuge in the country and live their last days out in peace. Appointed by Bishop Grantly (Cyril Luckham) to his post almost 12 years ago, Rev. Harding is suddenly attacked in a lawsuit by reformers who claim that corruption and nepotism have invaded into the town of Barchester. They begin calling for reform and although the lawsuit is defeated at the end, Rev. Harding ends by honorably resigning from Hiram’s Hospital, to live poorly and struggle on as a clergyman in Barchester.

Not too long after, a change in government calls for a change in church leadership: when a new prime minister is named just as Bishop Grantly passes away, Dr. Grantly (who had hoped to become the next bishop) is passed over for a new appointment: Bishop Proudie. Enter Alan Rickman (in an early role pulled off with resounding success), playing the fantastically flirtatious and social-climbing devious chaplin, Reverend Obadiah Slope. Slope is chaplin to shy, quiet, stammering Bishop Proudie, who is controlled by his wife, Mrs. Proudie (Geraldine McEwan), in nearly everything he does. A few other characters thrown into the mix, including the beautiful and crippled Signora Madeline Neroni (Susan Hampshire) and her rakish brother, combine to create a mesmerizing tale of love and the thirst for power.

As Slope and Mrs. Proudie (who began as “great friends) priggishly fight on for control over Bishop Proudie and his actions, ambition takes on a new meaning. A church appointment is made by one, and contradicted by the other: another appointment is made and overturned by the other: it creates a delightful almost-comedy of errors in which you chuckle at the power struggle and feel sorry for the innocent people affected so deeply by it.

Content: There is no language to speak of, and very little “violence” (if you can even call it that): a woman slaps a man (with good reason). Many discussions take place about corruption and nepotism in the Church of England, and the need for reform: nothing untoward is mentioned, other than that men are appointed and paid for doing very little work: nothing to do with Christianity, the reform is do with the church, its appointments, and its care of the people of Britain. Other content: a man flirts outrageously with many women, and a woman flirts with many men.

On the whole, a very unobjectionable film that entertains and delights on one hand, even as you can’t help but be saddened and appalled at the actions of some on the other hand. What amazes me most about the power-hungry actions of some characters is that all this takes place in the relatively small town of Barchester. Overall, this 1982 TV mini-series by BBC gives a fascinating in-depth look at the clergy and church reform, as it so realistically just might have been.

Richard Basehart stars as a Corporal who does not like the responsibilities of enlighten. When the Chinese invade the Division must pull succor across the river and spot up original defence positions. A stop leisurely platoon is left on the opposite bank of the river to enjoy a well-known pass. One by one the platoon’s leaders are killed and it is up to Basehart to build the day. Worthy Korean War drama/action movie. On par with “Pork Nick Hill” and “One Little To Zero”. Also stars Gene Evans as the Sergeant and Skip Homier as a soldier. Highly recommend!

A solid Sam Fuller directed movie with outstanding performances by Gene Evans and Richard Basehart. Classic Fuller with more dialogue than ‘action’. Similar to his other Korean War movie “Steel Helmet” including the exercise of WWII Infantry packs in Korea which had been replaced by then. Overall, a trustworthy movie for a Saturday afternoon. Fuller was a frail WWII Infantryman who showed us the grimness of the front-line soldier’s world. It would do a immense DVD situation with “Steel Helmet”. Throw in “Colossal Red One” and you would have the key Sam Fuller war movies.

Lately, there’s been a lot of state to DVD alarm movies released by Anchor Bay (It Waits, Room 6, Demon Hunter) ; honest about all of which have been nothing worth seeing. I expected the same from Voodoo Moon, but surprisingly it’s not a total crud-fest like I had expected it to be. Eric Mabius (Resident Harmful) and Buffy and Angel’s Charisma Carpenter star as siblings with tragic pasts, that soon salvage themselves holed up with a few other people as demonic forces threathen them. Predictable to the coarse, Voodoo Moon is surprisingly appetizing for what it is, with Mabius being a surprisingly decent hero, and Carpenter looking as heavenly as ever, though her comedic talents which Buffy and Angel fans know by heart, don’t accumulate to be establish on indicate. The action scenes are mostly decent, and the rest of the cast, including Re-Animator icon Jeffrey Combs and the Howling’s Dee Wallace, are ample as well. All in all, if you’re looking for an palatable B-movie romp that doesn’t rob itself tidy seriously, check out Voodoo Moon.

After viewing this shrimp gem I can honestly say I don’t care what other reviewers have to say. It’s that suited. High protein fear dash that provides some terrific fun in the dilapidated battle of Capable vs. Faulty.

That person, in this case, is Kevin VanHook, who has done a commendable job of storytelling without getting his audience wrapped up in annoying theatrics. No bobbling cameras, filtered color, or gore for gore’s sake. Straight forward action with some well-behaved special effects; so well done and very effective.
A truly professional cast with John Amos almost stealing the exhibit.
Now for the best fragment. The ending. NO SPOILERS HERE. But what a colossal fraction of cinematic genius. You’ll sit assist and say…wait a cramped…oh my God…that’s cold…proper icy.
Viewing “VOODOO MOON” will cast a spell on you.

Downfall is supposed to be the prequel to the Wearisome Station video game that was released prior to the video. There was a series of preview comics that were downloadable off the XBox marketplace that, and I assumed that the movie was going to be a gross for the movie. However, this was not the case.

Click HereTher movie primarily follows the Chief of Security of the Ishimura, who tries to hold the outbreak of violence and the necromorphs on the mining ship. The sequence follows a predictable path of disbelief, followed by a dug-in resistance. Several scenes are badly handled. Namely, a officer sees his absorb wife decapitate herself, and reacts as if she dropped a carton of eggs on the carpet. The ending is very sad and in line with the games tone. That was probably the only scene that reminded me of the Dumb Situation game.

Downfall was written and produced by someone who was told the spot of the video game, and maybe saw it played, but had no opportunity to play it themselves, and also had only cliff notes on the backstory. None of the scenes from the movie that appeared in game are remotely similar, and were well done in the video game, so it was disappointing to spy them mess with it. None of the weapons of equipment from the game even makes an appearance, though one that does reveal up prominently, I wish had been in the game.

I was a mountainous fan of the Lifeless Site video game and conception the legend line was drawn very well. The graphics were intense along with the creepy suspense that followed you throughout the entire game, which can be very difficult to do with a video game. The prequel on the other hand was a different epic. ///SPOILER\\\…………It explains that the whole crew is listless but I ALREADY KNEW THAT. It never went off any of the auido logs or the written logs, didn’t define anything and was very poorly drawn. The characters were astounding and where were the weapons that were aged in the game. I was expecting the prequel also to give background on clarke’s girl. That was a very enthralling legend and would have been astronomical if they included it.///END SPOILER\\\

Summation: Obtain the game, not the movie.

Here’s a movie that only a Steven Seagal fan could love. It’s not nearly as good as Under Siege (the movie destined to remain Seagal’s high-water mark), but not any worse than Above the Law. This time ol’ Steve is an agent of the Environmental Protection Agency who’s busting heads in Kentucky. He’s on good terms with the local yokels (including Marg Helgenberger and Harry Dean Stanton), but locks horns with a slimy mogul (Kris Kristofferson) who’s using abandoned mines to dump toxic waste. Along with an ecological message, Seagal serves up several broken limbs, cracked skulls, and bloody noses, and he even finds time to do some guitar picking with country boys such as Travis Tritt and Randy Travis. Once you’ve heard Seagal crooning a country tune, you’ll be eager to see him go back to whuppin’ the bad guys. –Jeff Shannon
